Before we begin, we present the different types of reading that you can engage in with this Manual, as it can be read conventionally, consulted with a greater focus on the practical instruction component, and even skimmed for an accessible overview of the discussion presented.
For a “conventional” reading
If the topic is new to you, we recommend a conventional reading of this book, that is reading from beginning to end without skipping sections. This way, you can access the philosophical perspectives that underpin the inclusive theatrical practices presented in Chapter 1, better understand the conceptualization we provide in Chapter 2, and finally, in Chapter 3, get “Hands-On” by appropriating the techniques and activities listed here.
If you do so, you will be rewarded with the tabs we have specially designed for you – small monologues that reveal the poetic potential brought by the different realities of the participants in this project. These monologues, created by artists who have directly engaged with the participants, will surely inspire new perspectives on what is commonly considered as “disability,” “difference,” or even “deficiency.”
Upon finishing this reading, if you wish to put into practice the paths presented here, we recommend consulting the Manual, whose guide we provide next.
For a “consultation” Reading
If you have just finished a first reading of the book, or you simply want to go straight to practice. You can now test your knowledge and begin planning the first theater sessions using the exercises presented in the Manual.
Here’s what we recommend:
- (For first readings only) Read “Let’s Talk About the Title”
- Read the chapter “Hands-On” and its respective worksheets;
For an “accessible” reading
If you haven’t noticed yet, the writing style of this Manual is intentionally “casual.” This is for two reasons: firstly, to make the theoretically dense content a bit easier to understand; secondly, to ensure that the text can be read aloud as smoothly as possible, whether by a human or a digital voice.
If you want to follow an accessible reading regimen that can provide an overview of the discussion presented here, we recommend the following:
- Reading “Let’s Talk About the Title”;
If you want to delve into the practical aspect and test your knowledge, you can consult the following sections:
- Read the chapter “Hands-On” and its respective worksheets.
Recommendations for any reading
However, we still recommend, in any reading, the illustrated tabs that you can find in this book. They are:
Just wait a little bit…– Telmo Ferreira
B for embracing – Joana Saraiva
The Silence Keeper – Joana Saraiva
Happy reading!
